Douglas Register First Point of the Season

Wednesday May 21 2014, 9:35am

The Douglas United Dragons have drawn 2-2 with the second placed FNQ FC Heat at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex on Saturday night to give them their first point of the season.

It was easily the side's best performance of the season and will hopefully kick start their climb up the table.

The match saw the Heat start brightly, hitting the post and putting the Dragons under pressure early.

The Dragons were able to weather this early pressure and began to impose themselves on the contest. After an even first twenty minutes or so it was the Heat who struck first.

A sloppy giveaway fell to a Heat player who lashed home from twenty yards to give them the lead.

This sparked a response from the Dragons who enjoyed their best spell of the match to date.

Lots of pressing meant that the Heat gave the ball away on numerous occasions and first Michael Wade and then Josh Gibson spurned glorious chances when it seemed easier to score.

Just when it looked like the Dragons would head to the break trailing, Dominic Varfis’ cross cum shot was fumbled into the back of the net by the Heat keeper to make the score 1-1 at the break.

The Dragons continued with the forward momentum at the start of the second half, continually forcing turnovers from the Heat.

Alistair Baird, playing against the team with his dad as the coach, was regularly nipping in to win the ball back.

The Dragons were rewarded for their spell on top when Michael Wade atoned for his earlier miss to give the Dragons the lead.

Unfortunately for the Dragons the Heat began to claw their way back into the match as they tired.

The Douglas players were giving away a number of silly fouls in and around the box and it was from one of these that the Heat drew level.

The ball was only partially cleared and a Heat player was on hand to unleash a twenty five yard thunderbolt into the top corner.

The remaining minutes were played out without much further incident as both teams seem content with a point which is how it did indeed end.

The Paddy’s Bar Man of the Match was a tough decision with a number of players putting in top drawer displays but in the end it was the energy and thrust of James Cooling that gave him the edge.

In the early game the Dragons Reserves were unable to get the result they desired despite being on top for large periods of the game.

They will need to start scoring some goals if they are to force their way up the table.

The match ended 0-0.

Next up is a home match against Leichardt at Cassowary Park. Games kick off at 5pm and 7pm so get out and cheer on the Dragons.
