Top shots take out prizes

Wednesday March 26 2014

Stunning snaps of far north Queensland at its most radiant have won over judges in The Newsport's monthly photography competition.

After considerable deliberation, Julie Doswell's 'Sunrise' has taken out the 'Best Photo' prize for the month of February.

Ms Doswell's glorious evening beach shot beautifully captured the orange bursts of sunlight reflecting off the water.

Judge, Sam Cullen said several entrants were unlucky not to win but added the combination of colours and Ms Doswell's unusual perspective made the photo hard to pass up.

"It's such a striking image," Mr Cullen said.

"The visual depth draws you in. It has such a charm to it ... like all great photography it evokes an emotion.

"You feel a wave of calm when you look at it. It's quite lovely."

Matthew Hermes' 'Vert' finished second and Ian Waldren's 'Garden Predator' came third.

Deborah O'Donoghue's 'Sun Bird' was voted most popular with The Newsport's readers and Barbara Lavis' 'Garden Bug' received a special mention.

The competition received 23 entries in February with judges impressed with the talent.

"It was a tough field this month," Mr Cullen said.

"But I'm really looking forward to seeing more great snaps of the region."

First prize will be published in the next edition of Port Douglas magazine. The winner also receives $25 worth of photo products and printing services, a $20 iTunes gift card, courtesy of Coles and a framed Best Photo certificate.

Second prize receives a Sailaway Sunset Sail for two people, valued at $100, with third place winning a family pass to the Herberton Spy and Camera Museum, valued at $40.
