Snappy crocs still a concern for Douglas paddlers

Snappy crocs still a concern for Douglas paddlers

A far north Queensland canoe club is continuing to launch into 'croc-infested waters' after residents complained about noise and parking at a proposed alternative site.

The Port Douglas Outriggers Canoe Club wrote to the Douglas Shire Council last month, seeking to move from the Port Douglas Yacht Club following repeated croc attacks.

Club President, Glen Thorp said the crocodiles are between two and four metres in size and pose considerable danger to paddlers.

"We've had problems with them popping up in front of my canoe and there's a particular one that tends to block our way," Mr Thorp said.

"Nobody wants that. We're not far off the water line so it's not hard for them to attack if they want to.

"They're not scared of us. We've tried throwing stones at them but it's not going to do anything."

Council approved 'in principle' the relocation of the club to Solander Boulevard, on the Four Mile Beach foreshore before nearby residents expressed concerns about the move.

In the meantime, Mr Thorp said he and other committed paddlers were continuing to launch from the dangerous yacht club site but were taking extra precautions.

"It means making sure our single craft are leaving from the beach and our exit and entry from the water is as quick as possible," he said.

"But the issues haven't gone away and the threat and dangers are still what they were a month ago."

Mayor Julia Leu said the Douglas Shire was continuing to consult with ratepayers and looking at other venues the canoe club could possibly call home.

Asked whether she was concerned for the safety of the paddlers using the yacht club site, Cr Leu said club members chose to do so at their own risk.

"Currently that is a decision for the outrigger club members," she said.

"We certainly want to resolve this at the earliest possible time.

"But it's not up to us, it's a decision to be made by the outriggers themselves."

Douglas Shire Council voted unanimously to approve the club’s relocation to its preferred site on Solander Boulevard, adjacent to the sailing club in early March.

The club has been trying to relocate for the last three years. When paddling from the yacht club the outriggers have to travel one kilometre up the inlet before hitting open water.

In their letter to council, Outriggers secretary Danielle Bellero wrote that locals were wary of joining them 'because of the crocs'.

"This has been a very frustrating problem indeed for our sport's growth in our Shire," Ms Bellero wrote.

The club continues to paddle on Monday and Wednesday evening and early Saturday morning.

"We can't cease the activities of the club. We just have to be more careful," Mr Thorp said.
