Damp Douglas region prepares for more rain
Monday March 24th 2014
Wet weather is likely to continue in some areas of far north Queensland following a soggy weekend, says the Bureau of Meteorology.
The Daintree river recorded 441 millimetres over the weekend, while Cairns had 85mm and Cooktown 70mm.
Duty forecaster, Greg Connor said moderate rainfall and possible thunderstorms are expected to stay until later in the week.
"For today we're expecting showers and even the chance of a thunderstorm for the Port Douglas area," he said.
"There will be further falls right through until Thursday, we're expecting showery conditions.
A combined moist atmosphere and an upper trough in the region will cause rainfall and thunderstorms, Mr Connor said.
But Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours' Sheena Walshaw said the heavy rain hadn't been a turn off for visitors to the Daintree.
"Friday was a crazy day. There were two or three roads that flooded," she said.
"But numbers haven't really dropped off for us.
"Road upgrades have made it easier to get up here and there's nothing cooler than seeing a raging creek beneath you as you surf the canopy.
"When it's not perfect beach weather is when the Daintree comes alive."
Ms Walshaw said the business had recorded its best ever February since they started eleven years ago.
The Douglas Shire Council closed the Junction Bridge in Mossman and Barrett's Bridge near Daintree Village on Friday but have since re-opened them.
