Walk this Cassowary Way: New attraction opens at Wildlife Habitat

Wednesday June 25 2014, 9:20am

In the 25th year of the incomparable Wildlife Habitat here in Port Douglas there is absolutely no sign of complacency or resting on their well earned laurels.

Owners, The Woodward Family, have steadily and determinedly developed the Wildlife Habitat since they acquired in it 2005 to recreate a comfortable home for the animals and a superb attraction for the visitors.

The latest addition on this march of progress is the Cassowary Walk which was officially opened by Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu last Saturday (21st June) at 3pm in the presence of about 100 invited guests.

Cassie and Airlie the two current long term resident cassowaries now have new enclosures where visitors can view them from a newly constructed raised boardwalk.

Those who have been to the habitat before would remember Cassie, the cassowary was the first incredible sight on the left as you opened the entrance gate.  This new enclosure is bigger, brighter and already you can tell Cassie is enjoying her new spacious environment.

And the visitors get a much better view of her, and her friend Airlie, from above.  The new walkway adds another perspective to the animal sanctuary and provides Port Douglas with an even more exciting addition to the tourism portfolio of ‘must dos’ visitors can enjoy during a stay in our region.

Habitat general manager Ben Woodward introduced his team who make everything happen each and everyday and it is their refreshing enthusiasm that permeates through every inch of the place.

The Woodwards and their team have created another iconic reason to add to the world heritage natural phenomena of both the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest for interstate and international visitors to come to the far north.

Congratulations go out to Charles Woodward, his family and the Wildlife Habitat team.

No matter what time of the year, this attraction never lets you down!

Wildlife Habitat was also featured on the Channel 10 program What's Up Downunder in May.
