QSO returns to Cairns
QSO Returns to Cairns, July 30 & 31
1st July, 2014
The Queensland Symphony Orchestra proudly returns to Cairns with 33 talented musicians presenting two symphony concerts. Conductor Maestro Jessica Cottis will make her first appearance in Cairns leading the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
A charismatic figure on the podium Jessica brings dynamism, intensity and clarity of vision to all her performances. The young British-Australian is currently Assistant Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and guest conductor for orchestras including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and London Philharmonic.
Opening the concert is Mendelssohn's Fantasy Overture to Midsummer Night's Dream. Mendelssohn composed the score as incidental music to Shakespeare's timeless comedy, setting the mood for the different scenes of the play.
In the overture, themes of the royal couple, the Elfs and, not to forget, the legendary ass, can be heard.
Two leading musicians from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra will be featured as soloists:
Concert Master Warwick Adeney will direct the orchestra as soloist in Vivaldi's Summer, the second of the famous "Four Seasons".
Associate Principal Bassoonist David Mitchell, born and raised in Cairns, plays a concerto with the QSO for the first time. He has chosen the second movement of Mozart's Bassoon Concerto, featuring the lyrical sounds of the instrument and perfectly displaying David's outstanding musicianship.
The highlight of the concert is Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, which the composer famously remarked as one of his best. It is sometimes known as "The Apotheosis of the Dance", and much loved by audiences around the world.
The Thursday morning Matinee concert also sees selected Cairns students performing alongside QSO musicians for Mendelssohn's Wedding March.
QSO's guest performance is proudly supported by the Queensland Government through playing Queensland Fund and the Cairns Civic Theatre.
In the leading up, QSO musicians will conduct workshops at five Cairns schools and in Yarrabah.
