Fugitives found in Douglas after community tip-off

Police have charged a 32-year-old man and 22-year-old woman, both from the Gold Coast, with drug offences after locating them at a Mitre Street property in Port Douglas on Tuesday night. 

The pair are also face a slew of charges including possession of a dangerous drug, driving a motor vehicle without a licence, obstructing police, escaping lawful custody and possession of a drug utensil. 

They were both scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrate's Court today.

Sergeant Damian Meadows of Port Douglas Police thanked the public for their assistance in finding the pair, saying it was a clear case of the public being able to help POLICE.

"We have always enjoyed a strong relationship with the community and in this case were able to locate these people before they left Port Douglas."

 

 

Two people are assisting police with inquires after officers attended a Port Douglas address at about 6pm Tuesday. 

Sergeant Damien Meadows told The Newsport that a man and a woman found at the address match the description of those sought by police since 2pm yesterday when a man bolted from a traffic stop into the grounds of Sheraton Port Douglas. 

Sergeant Meadows said police investigations were directed to the address after information received from the public and thanked the Port Douglas community for their assistance.

"I'd like to put a big thank you and congratulations out to the people of Port Douglas for helping us find this pair," Sergeant Meadows said. 

"Once again the Port Douglas community has come to the fore and assisted us and aided community safety."

Why the man fled from the traffic stop remains to be seen.
