Council seeks feedback for new street tree

Douglas Shire Council will ask the community for ideas on what kind of tree to replace a large beach almond in Macrossan Street that was blown down during Cyclone Ita.

Although planning to replace the tree, council has stated it will not plant another beach almond because they are more trouble than they’re worth.

Council Open Spaces Co-ordinator Peter Logan said the beach almond had looked good but wasn’t the right tree for the job.

“Council plans to replace the tree, but not with the same species,” Mr Logan said.

“The planting of beach almonds as an avenue of street trees was not suitable as they are a high maintenance, continually dropping large leaves and nuts that require daily resources by Council staff and business owners to keep tidy - they are beautiful trees but should never have been chosen for this location.

Mr Logan said council will ask for community feedback to determine an alternative species.

“A  more suitable species needs to be chosen that will  set a new  theme/avenue that can flow on over time  and also align with the rest of the streetscape in Macrossan St.”

Council has not yet determined what this species will be and plans to seek community feedback in the coming weeks to decide on the most suitable species and will then progress with the replacement of the tree.”
