Planned name change for Wonga

Wonga residents can have their say on a proposed name change to the local community.

The locality, 15 kilometres north of Mossman, could be renamed Wonga Beach following a proposal from Cairns Regional Council and local residents, said David Kempton, Member for Cook.

“Areas like Wonga which experience rapid growth can also experience confusion for local emergency services and postal services trying to locate property addresses,” Mr Kempton said.

“This popular area has long been commonly referred to as Wonga Beach, which is reflected by local road signage and the names of the local State school and caravan park.

“The beachfront is currently officially unnamed so this a great time to bring consistency to the area’s identity and build a greater sense of community.

“We encourage input from local residents and community groups to determine whether the naming proposals have public support.”

Submissions close on April 11 2014.

Queensland place name plan QPN1231 shows the location of the place considered under the proposal and may be viewed at the Department of Natural Resources and Mines Cairns Business Service Centre, State Government Building Level 4 William McCormack Place 5b Sheridan Street Cairns.

Copies of the proposal plan can also be downloaded from the Queensland Place Names section at www.dnrm.qld.gov.au.

Submissions in writing, either in support of or against the proposal, may be submitted online at www.dnrm.qld.gov.au or sent to Queensland Place Names, Level 9 Landcentre, Department of Natural Resources and Mines GPO Box 2454 Brisbane Qld 4001.
