Council forum to give voice to communities north of Daintree river

Douglas Shire Council will run a community forum next week to provide information to and receive feedback from residents, community groups and businesses north of the Daintree River.

The community forum will be held at the Diwan sports shed between 10am and 2pm on Thursday, August 28.

It will be conducted over four 50-minute segments to allow people to attend sessions of interest and all members of the public are welcome.

Electricity supply to communities north of the Daintree River is expected to be a hot-button issue at the forum, as are complaints about the Daintree River Ferry and requests for a parcel of land to be used for community development.

Douglas Shire Councillor Bruce Clarke said he and other councillors would be at the forum to listen to 'any queries and grumbles that the community has'.

"Power will be a major issue and there might be concerns about the ferry - I know I will actually be raising some of my own questions about the ferry at the forum," Cr Clarke said.

However Cr Clarke added that council's ability to deliver on any requests for power across the Daintree river would be limited.

"Unfortunately when it comes to power supply that's a state and Federal issue, council is really only going to be able to say 'yes we support the idea' or 'no we don't support the idea' and it'll be up to those governments to take that into account when they make the decision."

Councillor Terry Melchert also anticipated power supply would be a main topic of discussion but added the purpose of the forum was to discover other issues facing Daintree communities.

"Certainly electircity supply is a topical issue, it's close to people's minds," Cr Melchert said.

"I do think queues at the ferry and road maintenance have been long-term issues as well, in addition to garbage services like making sure the refuse facility at Cow Bay stays operational.

"The whole idea of the forums is advice on things that council might not yet be across."

Resident Rob Lapaer said the traffic-limiting effect of the Daintree Ferry was something he wanted to talk about at the forum.

"If council were to put a traffic limiter in Macrossan Street or Mossman we'd hear about it, that's for sure," he said.

"There are businesses over the river that are trying to feed the community but they aren't getting enough customers because of the limiting effect of the ferry."
