A Port Douglas business has recruited a national volunteer support group to ensure young adults and teenagers are well loooked after at Carnivale celebrations later this month.

Red Frogs Australia provides young people with alternatives to alcohol and encourages responsible drinking at major events nationwide, including Schoolies Week on the Gold Coast.

H20 Warehouse have donated $500 to Red Frogs volunteers to set up a 'hydration station' during Carnivale.

Team members will give away pancakes and icy poles to festivalgoers and provide additional assistance where necessary.

Sergeant Damian Meadows said he strongly supported the initiative which will be part of Carnivale for the first time this year.

"It's just another level of care. They quickly identify people who may be at risk and can even provide some counselling services in certain instances," Sergeant Meadows said.

"We've had problems with youth in the past and the unlawful consumption of alcohol but these guys can address that issue in a different way to what we can.

"They're certainly more than welcome."

H20 Warehouse's Lee Emma Smith, a former Red Frogs volunteer herself, said she had seen first-hand the impact the group can have at similar festivals and events.

"The volunteers a similar age generally and are there to guide them and help," Ms Smith said.

"People having a bad experience can attract the wrong sort of attention and hurt Carnivale.

"Having someone like the Red Frogs keeps things from getting out of hand."

Ms Smith said the number of volunteers at Carnivale had yet to be determined but a team would be assembled later in the week based on attendance.

Organisers estimate as many as 8000 people will attend the ten-day event this year, starting May 16.

In addition to the stall, Ms Smith said volunteers would patrol Macrossan Street and Four Mile Beach, assisting where needed.

Sergeant Meadows said authorities will not tolerate underage drinking during Carnivale.

"There are substantial fines in place for people who offer alcohol to underage people," he said.

Red Frogs was established in 1997 and provides support to school leavers, uni students, party and festivalgoers, event managers, sporting groups, and musicians in Australia, New Zealand, UK, Canada, South Africa and Poland.
