Power almost fully restored in Douglas Shire following TC Ita

Monday February 24th 2014

Ergon Energy says it hopes to have fully restored power to Douglas Shire residents in time for the Easter long weekend as the region bounces back from Tropical Cyclone Ita.

Crews are still working to connect a remaining 41 houses 'off supply' including 25 homes in the Upper Daintree and a further ten homes at Stewart Creek.

48 staff are on the ground, including 10 workers from Bundaberg brought in over the weekend.

Ergon spokesperson Mark Timmerman said SES boats are being used to access flood affected areas near Stewart Creek.

"That area is one of two areas of main focus along with Cooktown," Mr Timmerman said.

"In terms of our response the Douglas area is a very high priority.

"We're still hoping to have all customers power restored before the Easter long weekend.

"We're on track to do that and may even consider delivering generators to ease the burden."

More than 27,000 customers were without electricity at one stage last weekend due to damaging winds and flood waters impacting power supply, Mr Timmerman said.

Overall, almost 46 000 customers lost supply as a result of Tropical Cyclone Ita.

Some properties may require repairs before they are safe to reconnect.

Ergon is urging customers to use licensed electrical contractors if their home or business premises' wiring, switchboard or mains connection have been damaged or inundated by flooding.
