More than 1000 people have roamed the aisles of Woolworths' new $15.4 million Mossman store within the first thirty minutes of the long-awaited supermarket's official opening. 

Shoppers were treated to free samples and opening day specials on Tuesday evening with the supermarket opening at 6pm.

New store manager Shane Wight said the store had been designed to minimise its total electricity output and would adopt waste and packaging minimisation strategies.

Woolworths State Manager Michael Batycki said the new store is three times larger than its predecessor, offering more than 50,000 products to it customers.

In a speech, Douglas Shire Council Mayor Julia Leu acknowledged the Indigenous elders and pointed to the extra income the store will generate for Mossman, both directly and indirectly.

Woolworths also made donations to several community groups, presenting cheques for $1000 to Yalanji Arts, Douglas Arts Base and the Douglas Shire Historical Society. 

St Augustine's choir sang three songs with singer-guitarist, Yahdoh also performing.

Indigenous elders King Alfred Diamond and his sister Clare welcomed the new store to Mossman. 

Woolworths Mossman Manager, Shane Wight said 127 people would be employed at the new store, creating more than 30 new jobs for people in the region.

"We are proud that the opening of the new Woolworths sees us welcoming new people to the Mossman area," he said.

The store will be open from 8am to 9pm, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5:30pm on Saturdays and 9am to 6pm on Sundays.
