Floodwaters ease as cyclone clean up starts

Floodwaters subside as cyclone clean up starts

Saturday April 12 2014

Emergency services say floodwaters are easing in Mossman and the Daintree but that roads throughout the Douglas Shire remain blocked.

More than 2000 homes are without power in the Douglas Shire, including all 93 residences in the Daintree Village.

Douglas Shire workers estimated at least 1500 homes had spent almost 24 hours without power, primarily in the Mossman area.

Ergon Energy is working to reconnect the power in Mossman but it's unclear when the power will return.

SES has had less than ten reports of structural damage to homes throughout the region.

A floating tree has damaged Noah's Creek Bridge on Cape Tribulation Road north of Thornton Beach.

One lane is still open but motorists are urged to drive with caution.

A rapid damage assessment unit from the QFES will visit Cooya Beach, Newell Beach and Wonga Beach unit tomorrow to determine what resources are needed to help the cyclone battered communities recover.

Council crews and residents have started work on the road north of Daintree River which is cut off in multiple locations.

It is uncertain when the road will be cleared.

Douglas Disaster coordination centre is now active, running out of the shire's Mossman offices.

The Rex Range Road to Julatten is currently cut. The road is maintained by the Mareeba Shire Council.
