It was supposed to be Sean Hunter and Liz McConnon's special day but Tropical Cyclone Ita had other ideas.

The cyclone crossed the coast near Cape Flattery as a category four system on Friday night forcing the Cairns couple to postpone their wedding until Sunday.

Sean and Liz planned the wedding more than a year ago after getting engaged on holiday in Fiji.

"We nearly got hit by a cyclone then too," Sean says.

More than 100 guests planned to join them in Port Douglas, with family and friends flying in from Sean's hometown of Sydney and Cowra in New South Wales where Liz grew up. 

Around 20 guests won't make it with some flights into Cairns Airport cancelled and several roads blocked off.

"We thought it was the end of the cyclone season so we'd be right," Sean says. 

"In a way it hasn't worked out too badly. 

"Not many people get to say they got married in a cyclone, I guess."

Liz, 24, says Friday was 'pretty stressful' with the wedding called off and then back on again on more than one occasion. 

She says guests have been good humoured while new arrangements were made for caterers, photographers and flowers. 

"I was very worried but they're all having lots of fun. They're all having little cyclone parties and bunkering down," she says.  

"They're really not too phased. We were having dinner last night and everyone was in good spirits."

The wedding will still be held at St Mary's Church by the ocean with the reception now at Niramaya Villas and Spa. 

Sean and Liz say they're extremely grateful to Sheryn Blundstone, a stranger, who when she heard their story gave up her afternoon to find a venue for their recpetion. 

The couple plan to fly out on Monday, honeymooning again in Fiji. 

"But if there's another cyclone we'll be giving up I think," Liz says.
