People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to follow instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by authorities. A cyclone warning is current for coastal areas from Cape Melville to Cardwell including Cooktown, Port Douglas and Cairns, and extending inland to areas including Mareeba and Chillagoe. Tropical Cyclone Ita was estimated to be 15 kilometres southwest of Cooktown, moving south southwest at 9 kilometres per hour. A major flood warning has been issued for the Daintree River. The Bureau of Meteorology have recorded around 240 millimetres of in the area since Friday morning. Levels at Daintree Village are predicted to continue rising during Saturday and near the major flood level of around nine metres later this morning. Higher levels are possible as the heavy rain continues. |
