Cyclone forces Lizard Island evacuation

Thursday April 10 2014, 9:08am

Guests at Lizard Island resort have been evacuated to Cairns as far north Queensland prepares for Tropical Cyclone Ita.

TC Ita has the potential to be the strongest tropical cyclone to cross the Queensland coast since Tropical Cyclone Yasi in 2011.

The resort flew all 31 guests out on Wednesday and have re-booked people due to arrive over the next five days.

None of the resort's 63 staff will remain on the island with employees busily preparing for TC Ita to cross late on Friday.

Workers are securing all outdoor areas and moving boats to the mainland.

The evacuation is expected to be complete by Thursday morning.

The island will remain closed until Sunday, April 13.
