ANZAC spirit alive in Douglas Shire

ANZAC spirit alive in Douglas Shire

Thursday April 24 2014, 9:04am

The Douglas Shire will honour the service of Australian soldiers with a crowd of more than 600 people expected to commemorate ANZAC Day at the dawn service in Mossman.

Mossman RSL Secretary Wally Gray said attendance at the service had grown in recent years, particularly among young people.

"It definitely has," Mr Gray said.

"I think a lot of people are becoming more aware of what ANZAC stands for and why we've got to commemorate.

"They're starting to realise they have an aunt or uncle who served in our armed forces and what that means.

Servicemen and women from World War II, the Vietnam War and the Korean War will be in attendance," Mr Gray said.

"I don't think we have anyone left from World War I but there are a couple of dozen [Douglas residents] who served in World War II still alive," he said.

The Mossman dawn service will be followed by a parade and memorial service later in the morning.

Mr Gray said ANZAC Day is a good way to learn more about Australia's roles in significant conflicts and wars throughout its history.

"The best way to put it is it's an informative way to remember what we've got today, how we got it and why we got it," he said.

The Mossman Dawn service starts at 5:30am at the Mossman Cenotaph on Front Street outside the Douglas Shire Council Administration Building.

A parade will assemble in Macrossan Street Port Douglas at 10:15am for the memorial service.

The Douglas Shire Council is advising businesses Macrossan Street between Grant Street and Wharf Street will be closed between 10am and 11am on ANZAC Day.

A dawn service will also be held at Cow Bay Memorial at 5am with a parade to assemble at Cow Bay Hotel.

The Daintree Ferry will be in operation from 4am on ANZAC Day.
