Explore the art of creativity at Studio 49

Studio 49’s claim to ‘amuse, entertain and surprise with style and design’ and ‘a place to discover the unexpected’ is the perfect depiction of their Port Douglas artisan gallery.

Located in the old school house on the corner of Owen and Murphy streets (just up from the Post Office), the bright, open space hosts a vast range of mediums, from sculpture, paint, mosaic, jewellery and soft furnishings, from artists across Australia and captures a range of themes.

Owners Michael Edwards and Cynthia Spencer offer a warm welcome, beautifully complimenting the ‘at home’ layout of the space, with informative insights into the displayed works and a clear passion for art in all its forms. With their innovative designs, creative pieces and alternative collections of modern and antique object d'art from around the world, be prepared to discover an exciting array of art that won’t fail to do exactly what it says on the tin.

Lovers of art will especially appreciate how well the combination of pieces work together to create an exciting space that leaves much to be discovered. The presence of Yves Klein’s International Klein Blue in Cynthia Spencer’s piece, Nature Nurture, featuring wood and 22 carat gold, leaves the door of interpretation wide open.

There’s so much to see that even a less discerning eye won’t be able resist the unique jewellery designs and stunning layout both inside and out of this historic property.

Studio 49 now also houses a café with a Tropical North Queensland vibe: locally-grown and roasted coffee and locally-baked cakes served on the white wooden verandah - the perfect opportunity to flip through Michael and Cynthia’s book collection, have a chat and soak up the atmosphere.
