Man charged after resort burglary

Smithfield detectives have charged a 34-year-old Cairns man with alleged burglary offences in relation to thefts at a Port Douglas resort.

The charges came as part of an investigation into burglary offences at a resort on Port Douglas Road where it is alleged that two unit residences with unsecured doors were targeted on the night of August 3 with handbags, purses, jewellery and other items stolen.

The Manoora man was charged on Monday with two counts of burglary and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on October 1.

Police are reminding residents and visitors to be mindful of their personal and property safety by undertaking basic security precautions, adding that open or unlocked doors provided an open invitation for opportunistic thieves.
