State to scrap car rego stickers

Queensland will phase out vehicle registration stickers from next year, with the State Government predicted to save at least $3.5 million.

"The reality is that technology has moved on," Transport Minister Scott Emerson said of the labels, used in Queensland since 1932.

In an ABC News report, Mr Emerson said from October next year, they'll no longer be needed for cars and other light vehicles that weigh less than four-and-a-half tonnes, including motorcycles, caravans and trailers.

Police and transport services now use number plate recognition, rather than the coloured stickers, to identify registration details.

Queensland is following the lead of other states in scrapping the sticker scheme, after New South Wales from 1 January this year, Western Australia from 1 January 2010, South Australia from 1 July 2011, and Tasmania from 1 September 2012.
