Start to construction of the Port Douglas roundabout has been delayed, but is still expected to be finished in December.

Member for Cook David Kempton told The Newsport exclusively in August that construction of a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Captain Cook Highway and Port Douglas Road was expected to start in mid-September at a cost of $2 million.

However a Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesman said construction was now expected to start next month, citing the tendering process had taken longer than expected.

The works, to be carried out by the Transport and Main Roads Department’s commercial construction arm, RoadTek, is likely to see traffic affected for around two months in effort to improve safety at the notorious intersection.

“The contract should be awarded in the next few weeks, and the project remains on track to be finished in December,” the spokesman said.

The department says further information will be provided to residents and stakeholders in the coming weeks.

“Letters will be sent to impacted stakeholders when relevant information about the construction becomes available,” the spokesman said.
