700 cyclists converge on Douglas
More than 700 riders are expected to converge on Mossman and Port Douglas this weekend as the 520km Cycle Queensland Adventure Tour finishes on Four Mile Beach.
Riders pedalled off from Mission Beach last Sunday for Innisfail, and have wound their way through the Atherton Tablelands via Millaa Millaa, Yungaburra, Mareeba today (Friday) to Mount Molloy and Mossman tomorrow (Saturday), finishing on Four Mile Beach outside the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club on Sunday.
Port Douglas Daintree Tourism Chief Executive, Doug Ryan, said accommodation houses were to reap the benefits of the tour, as hundreds of families and support crews intended staying on in the region following the event.
“It’s great for the region, we’ve had a lot of events come into the region this year, including two car rallies, and there’s been a lot of bookings come in from this group,” Mr Ryan said, adding his organisation had be concentrating on getting events into the area and had been promoting the November 3 CANEGROWERS Great Barrier Reef Marathon to the Cairns and Townsville markets.
Mr Ryan said no roads were expected to be closed for this weekend’s Cycle Queensland Adventure Tour, as cyclists were to cycle into Port Douglas at their leisure. However, motorists are urged to take care.
Bicycle Queensland is a non-profit, community and advocacy organisation promoting safe, everyday bicycle riding.
The next adventure tour is from Brisbane to the Gold Coast on October 20.
