Community effort quells cane fire

Mossman Police are calling for potential witnesses into a cane fire in Mossman yesterday behind George Davis Park.

Local cane farmers pitched in to help firies by providing  tractors and water tanks to help stop the blaze, which burned an area the size of a football oval, at around 10.30am.

Mossman Police Officer in Charge, Matt Smith, said it was lucky the cane was in the early stages of growth.

“If it had been fully matured cane, the fire would have certainly taken off and possibly endangered nearby businesses,” he said. “We were also lucky there was no wind to speak of, as high winds would have made it a lot harder to contain.”

Police are calling for any information to be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 any time of the day.
