Crocs’ night on the red carpet
The Port Douglas Crocs AFL club celebrated their year in style on Friday night when they stepped onto the red carpet at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas.
Around 200 people turned out to the end-of-year ball at the resort’s ballrooms, with the glitz and glamour of the Brownlow Medal in mind.
The night was celebrated with the return of former Crocs captain, Evan “Buddha” Hocking flying in from Melbourne to host the evening and provide a stand-up comedy routine direct from the Melbourne comedy circuit.
Life membership was given to club stalwart, John Cameron, who has acted as former president, treasurer, chef, spectator, ground security officer, water boy and spectator over the years. It was an award well-deserved.
Best and fairest awards were awarded in the seniors to Dylan Wearmouth by three votes over captain Adam Boone to win on the final vote of the night.
Corey Barter won the reserves award by a massive 57 votes over Mitch Nicholson, while Norm Walker was named club person of the year.
An emotional video tribute to club founder, the late Ernie Baxter, failed to leave a dry eye in the house. Attendees concurred it was one of the finest presentation nights in the club’s history.
