Clarke: Shire roads need upgrade

During a tour of local Council-managed Shire roads at the start of October, DSC councillor candidate Bruce Clarke identified a number in need of major maintenance.

"This should be one of the commitments to be very seriously looked at by the new Council in the first budget," Mr Clarke said.

"Bow Street in Mossman is like going on a roller coaster ride. Roads in Wonga Beach need attention. Cooya Beach Road is very bad, and has been in the same condition for at least 15 years. Some of the back streets of Port Douglas are in need of repair."

Mr Clarke said the road pictured "is typical of a great number of Shire roads", and evidence that minor pot hole repairs are the extent of maintenance.

"If elected, I will be pushing for a long term commiment for the upgrade of these roads," Mr Clarke said.

"This will have to be a long term commitment, as we will have to achieve financial stabillity so as to be able to carry out Capital Works Programmes like this."
