U12s team effort creates win

DARREN KILLEEN

In the same vein as the Aussie cricket team, the Muddies U12s came away with their first win of the season on Saturday against a strong Mareeba team during a rain-affected match, 135 to 96.

Fielding first, the Muddies started strongly with opening bowler Luke Twomey taking two for ten from his three overs.  He was well supported by Vincent Killeen (none for none off two) and captain, Ashton Davenport, who took one for six from his three overs. Ryan Stanaway took one for 14 from his three overs while Scott Cooper starred with both bat and ball taking one for 11 from his three overs.

Lachie Dowling’s figures of none for nine off three overs don’t give a true picture of his performance and he was very unlucky not to have a wicket to his name.  Nicholas Raynor took none for eight including a maiden. Bailey Elliot and Liam Clatcherty both bowled well while Connor White and substitute fielder Arosh were both very economical. All the boys put in a commendable effort in the field effecting two run-outs and three catches with a very wet ball.

Luke and Liam opened the batting for the Muddies with Luke hitting three boundaries on his way to making 14 from 24 balls faced.  Liam was unlucky to be the first victim of Mareeba’s specialist bowler falling for a duck. Doing wonders for his strike rate, Nick made four from three balls before having his stumps knocked over. Substitute Arosh played a steady innings making nine from 28 to be the not-out batsman for the day.

Connor was the second victim of Mareeba’s specialist bowler which then bought Scott Cooper to the crease. Scott played some beautiful strokes retiring on nine from 21 balls. His total could easily have been considerably higher had it not been for a heavily soaked outfield which repeatedly saw balls stopping just inside the boundary rope. Bailey was unlucky to fall for a duck, as was Lachie, who showed great resolve in playing on although ill. Ryan faced 18 balls for his four runs and retired not-out. Vincent made 16 from 15 balls before falling victim to a sharp piece of fielding and was run out.

The boys are really starting to gel as a team and were well lead by Ashton who contributed eighteen from sixteen balls before falling LBW.

Next week the boys travel to the Tablelands to take on Atherton.

Day 1 Wrap: U14 Muddies v Innisfail

The Under-14 Muddies cricket team travelled to South Johnstone on Saturday to play against Innisfail Monsoons in for the first day of a two-day match.

The day started when Brayden Wall did the toss and won, Brayden deciding to bat first. Levi Trewick and Keel Sorensen opened the batting for the Muddies. Rain interrupted play after Innisfail had bowled four overs and it reduce the innings to 60 overs.

Levi and Keel batted well until Keel was caught out for two runs in the eighth over. Nathan Deuble joined Levi and both boys put on a few runs until Levi was called out on LBW. The Muddies were 2 for 35 after the 11th over.  Brayden came to the crease and he and Nathan batted a good partnership until Brayden (2) was caught in slips. Daniel Davidson joined Nathan until Nathan was bowled out on nine from 31 balls. Finn Stanaway was in next batting with Daniel until the 23rd over, but Finn was unlucky to be bowled without making a run.

Innisfail's best bowler returned and took two consecutive wickets of Curtis White and Ryan Doble in the one over. Reuben Allison came in to bat at the 25th over and he and Daniel batted out the end of the first day innings. Muddies score was 7 for 93. Daniel and Reuben will return next weekend and, together with Josh Edwards and Tex McDowall, will need to bat wisely to bat out another 32 overs.

It was time for the Muddies to bowl with Daniel opening and taking the first wicket. Ryan was second bowler and didn't have the best day finishing 0 for 12 after two overs. Nathan Deuble and Levi Trewick bowled and kept the Innisfail score low.  Brayden and Curtis came into the attack, with bowling stats of 0 for 5 and 0 for 8. Reuben Allison and Tex McDowall bowled number seven and eight,  Tex finishing his bowling with 0 for 11.

At drinks, the Muddies had Innisfail 1 for 47 with 15 overs left to take some hard-earned wickets. Josh Edwards bowled 0 for 5 at Innisfail's best batsman Stirling McAvoy until Stirling retired after facing 65 balls.  It was Finn Stanaway who then took two wickets and finished his bowling with 2 for 1 assisted by catches from Brayden and Daniel.

Final bowler Keel Sorensen bowled his four overs and finished with 1 for 3 taking a catch off his own bowling. Daniel finished 1 for 6 off 4, Levi 0 for 4 off 4 and Nathan 0 for 2 off 3.  Reuben Allison bowled the last over of the day and got a wicket on the first ball of his third over finishing 1 for 2. Innisfail's score was 5 for 64.

Next Saturday Under-14 Muddies will play the second day of the match against Innisfail at the Port Douglas Mud Pit starting at 1pm.
