Cruisey markets for Cairns waterfront

The first of a series of markets located next to the Cairns cruise liner terminal will be held today, set to welcome passengers aboard the Volendam when it docks this morning.

Cairns Regional Council Mayor Bob Manning said the markets provided an additional outlet for local people to sell products reflecting the tropics and would provide a vibrant welcome to visitors.

“A market featuring local products and souvenirs and staffed by friendly local people is a wonderful way to greet our cruising visitors,” Cr Manning said.

“The response from stallholders to this new market has been very positive and I’m confident it will be a successful addition to our growing market calendar.”

Cr Manning added that residents and non-cruising visitors were also welcome to explore the markets.

“There will be nearly 50 market stalls, featuring a wide variety of items for sale – many of which are handmade,” Cr Manning said. “It’s the perfect opportunity to pick up a few Christmas gifts.”

The markets will be held in parklands adjacent to the cruise liner terminal from 8am to 5pm.

Cairns Regional Council will manage the markets, which will coincide with the arrival of cruise liners, under an agreement with Ports North.
