Mossman gymnasts perform under pressure

On Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September, the Mossman and District Gymnastics Club travelled to Atherton for the final Gymnastics competition for 2013.

Participating clubs from the FNQ region were 8 in total from Atherton, Barron Valley, Ingham, Malanda, Mareeba, Mossman, Southside Cairns and Townsville. At least 280 gymnasts performed in each apparatus over the weekend in varying levels.

Congratulations to the Atherton gym club, for a very organised competition, being their first sanctioned event with such a large selection of gymnasts. Everyone is looking forward to participating again in 2014 at the Atherton Gymnastics Club.

All gymnasts performed well under pressure, especially with extremely warm and steamy conditions. This competition saw the Mossman and District Gymnastics club send their largest selection of 14 girls to a Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Competition yet.

All girls were up against some really tough competition, often competing against girls much older than themselves. From WAG Level 1 Open Charli Feben did extremely well on all apparatus but shone on her floor routine receiving 3rd place and Fourth overall out of 15 gymnasts. Grace Jones and Ruby Colbridge showed poise and strength, gaining great experience and exposure within the competition arena.

From WAG Level 2 Under 8’s it was Charlotte Henderson, Jaymi Burcombe and Rosa Johnson’s first time competing in Level 2 and having a lot of competition being scored amongst a group of 45 gymnasts, all performed very well. From WAG Level 2 Over 8’s Alyssa Heise showed great poise being scored against her peers in a group of 26.

From WAG Level 3 Over Tali Hoye did really well on all apparatus, but excelled on Beam receiving 3rd and overall 7th. Olivia Dollard gave a confident performance as well as Jorja Harvey, Della Miller and Kahli Frizelle doing great work and showing much improvement.

From WAG Level 4 Shayla Frizelle and Paulina Bernhardi were up against some tough competition, struggling with nerves, especially on vault and bars, but overall did really well considering it was their first competition in Level 4.Overall the coaches were very happy with the results and gained insight into areas for improvement.

All girls came away with more experience and appreciation for the sport of Gymnastics and what is involved in such large competitions. Mossman and District Gymnastics Club are busily preparing their gymnasts for their Pirate Themed End of Year Presentation night on Friday 6th December 6.00pm – 7.30pm At the Indoor Sports Centre, ALL WELCOME.

The Mossman and District Gymnastics Club provide a wonderful opportunity for our local kids to become proficient in a world-class sport gaining strength, flexibility, balance, co-ordination and a sense of pride while having fun.
