Positive changes for FNQ workforce

More Far North Queenslanders are working and fewer are unemployed, according to the latest labour force data released yesterday.

The data, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, found that the Far North statistical region enjoyed a 1.5 per cent drop in the unemployment rate, the largest decrease by percentage in all 13 work force regions across the State for the year to October 2013.

It also showed a 2.8 per cent increase in the number of employed people for the same time period, meaning an extra 3800 Far Northerners joined the workforce in the past year.

“While there is still a lot of work to be done, these latest figures are direct evidence that we are enjoying positive changes long overdue for the people of this region," said Member for Cook David Kempton.

“At 7.7 per cent, our unemployment rate is still far too high but we, as a Government, and as a community, are making inroads."

Mr Kempton said Queensland had experienced the strongest increase in trend employment of any state or territory in October, with 4,200 jobs created.
