Port Douglas Magazine announced the finalists for the 2013 Douglas Business Awards today, with the winners to be announced at a gala ceremony on November 22.

An eagerly anticipated annual event, the DBAs are the region’s only customer-voted awards program recognising and celebrating excellence among the local business community.  

More than 29,100 votes have been received over the past year – online, in-person, and by post - the most in the program’s four-year history. Last year, around 10,800 votes were submitted.

Organisers said in previous years, some categories have been clear runaways and obvious winners, but this year, every category was closely contested. 

This year’s gala ‘night of nights’ ceremony sets a new standard, with new voting categories and ceremony location - the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas’ 800-square-metre Glade Pavilion – to match the region’s revitalisation and optimism after the recent tourism boost and local government election.

Douglas Shire Mayor-elect Julia Leu, fresh from her win on November 9, has confirmed her attendance at the ceremony.

Professional and trade services categories were added this year, joining accommodation, tours, tourist services and attractions, restaurants and dining, real estate, wedding services, retail, entertainment, events, and beauty.  

As well, non-customer-voted Awards will be presented, including:

• Editor's Award of Excellence;
• The Douglas Chamber of Commerce Young Achiever's Award;
• Cairns Chamber of Commerce Douglas Businessperson of the Year;
• The Douglas Innovations & Economic Development Award; and
• The Diane Cilento Excellence in Art Award.
