Sharkies endure highs and lows
Under 6
The Under 6 Sharks travelled to Jones Park last Saturday to play Edmonton and Kangaroos. Once again the young Sharks played some terrific footy but it was their defence in particular which was most pleasing.
Zavan Salam lead the way with his super effort while new comer Chelsea Ghee played awesome footy in her first game. Kyan and EJ scored a couple of great tries while Zane and Ryder ran the ball straight and hard. Man of the match was Chelsea Ghee for a top effort.
Under 7
The Under 7 Sharkies had another tough game this week against super-fast Edmonton. The first half was a good even tussle between the two teams, however, Edmonton ran away with game in the end.
The mighty Sharks never gave up all game and tried their best with Saxon Vizard again leading the way. Hallie Jenkins and Bonita Soloman-Adams also played great games. Couper and Garence both showed a great improvement in defence, while Blaze Wilson was awarded Man of the Match for his mighty effort on the day.
Under 8
This week the Under 8s played another strong game to come away with a win against Edmonton Lightning 20 -16. Sharkies try scorers were David Neller (3), Beau Paulke and Wyatt Laurigan. Man of the Match was awarded to Beau Paulke.
Having only a couple of runs to his name, Beau still managed to weave in and out of the defence to score a great individual try for his team. Coach’s award is deserved by David Neller for consistent attendance and effort at training.
Under 9
The Under 9s took on Edmonton Lightning and came home with a 22-4 win on Saturday. Strong defence from the Sharks, along with brilliant attacking, saw the boys execute training drills to perfection resulting in points on the board.
Brodie Francis played his best game to date with fierce defence and storming runs. Halves Tyson Osborne and Khalen Marr worked together superbly to push the Sharks forward and a grubber from Tyson set Zecheriah Paulke up for a great try in the corner.
Josh, Melekai and Kai all added four points to the board and Tyson, Khalen and Melekai successfully converted. A huge thanks to the Under 8s boys who stepped up to play for us for the weekend.
Man of the Match went to Brodie for an all-round great game and coach's award went to Tyson for a good game.
Under 10
The Under 10 boys were left scratching their heads this week. Edmonton scored 11 tries against us and with great defence left us scoreless.
Words from their coach explained that the boys’ effort at training was displayed in Saturday’s game. So boys, put your seatbelts on for training this week.
Christopher Neil was worthy of Man of the Match for doing a great job tackling and backing up his team mates. Coach’s award was presented to Lafe Hatfield for not giving up against a relentless Edmonton side.
Train hard boys and come back stronger next week.
Under 11
Under 11s started off slowly, letting the Edmonton Lightning score first, but then hit back quickly with Mason Young scoring a clever try from dummy half and Bronson Ryan converting.
The boys had been training hard during the week on their tackling which showed by keeping them in the game, with some solid defence by Etho, Pacman, Derrick, Connor and Laquan, who played up from Under 10s.
After half time Edmonton scored again making the score 12-6. The Sharks were the next to score with a stylish try by Bronson Ryan converted by Pacman Jenkins, making it 12-12.
The boys used the whole field with some strong running from Nick, Brayden and Heath, but were not able to stop Edmonton from scoring a late try to make it 18-12 at full time.
The boys played an excellent game with only 12 players. The training during the week is starting to pay off, so keep up the good work boys. Man of the Match went to Pacman Jenkins.
Under 12
The Under 12s put together two good halves of footy and also had to overcome some dreadful decisions to win 20-10. The team really showed great discipline to win the game.
Man of the Match performances from Lachy Adams who played his best game for the team playing dummy half - the passes were great and tackled well all day - and BJ who was constantly breaking the line and defending well.
New Sharky Liam Clacherty found himself out on the wing and also defended well. Coaches mention to Tom Walker, who is returning from a bike accident, played a great half of footy.
Under 13
The Under 13s had another gruelling game on Saturday when they took on Edmonton Lightning. Lightning ended up defeating the Sharks 42 - 18, however, the boys showed some brilliant form against one the best teams in the competition.
Cody Port was brilliant with his attacking scoring 4 tries and Phillip Oui ran hard and straight though out the game. Zac Osborne was outstanding in defence and made solid ground with his fierce running, also adding 2 points with a successful conversion.
Austin Tayley's speed ensured the opposition were slowed markedly and newcomer Marley Price Schacher added a great boost to the Sharks side. Sean, Kyle and Tarquin played up to help the Under 13s and along with the rest of the team ensured Lightning had to work for every point.
Zac and Cody both maintained level heads throughout the game and never let the the scoreboard affect the intensity of which they played. Their commitment and efforts earned Zac the Man of the match and Cody received the coach’s award.
Under 14
The Under 14s played against a well drilled Edmonton Storm at Jones Park on Saturday. The Sharks started out well enough by completing their sets but weren't able to keep the hard running Storm boys pinned down in their end of the field.
The Storm's superior field position took its toll on the Sharks and the tries became a bit free flowing for a time. To their credit the Sharks dug in and managed to put on some well executed tries to improve the score line a bit.
The final score was 44-14 to Edmonton. Man of the Match went to Dean McCarthy with his outstanding defence. A special mention to U13 player, Cody Port, who was also one of the better players on the field.
Under 15
A lethargic Mossman side took on a committed Mareeba team on Saturday. Mossman never seemed to get into rhythm but were lucky to come away with a win never the less.
Brandon Brown and Mat Klaus were the two standouts for the day with Brandon Brown winning Man of the Match award. Congratulations also go to our second rowers, Wynn Adams and Lucason Mosby who also had solid games.
