Nothing trivial about this cause

After the success of last month's K-Star Charity Trivia Night another event has been planned to help some of the world' most underprivileged people.

On Wednesday 15 May, the Central Hotel will be packed with the greatest minds the town has to offer as they compete for a plethora of prizes and the sought-after K-Start Trivia Title.

But the real winners will be poverty stricken women and children in Nepal.

Local legend Imelda Noli has been so touched by her many trips to the central Asian country that she founded the 'Women's & Street Children's Home' (WASH) in the Kathmandu Valley.

"I went to Nepal as a tourist in October 2009 and fell in love with the country and the people," Imelda said.

"When I go back in August this it will be my eighth trip in four years."

The house which eleven children (four of whom are orphaned) call home costs $900 a month to maintain. The children receive food, school fees, and are clothed, a huge improvement from the harrowing life they are familiar with.

"The children that we have in the orphanage have been living on the streets, or some of the children have been taken from their village because their parents can't take care of them," Imelda said.

It doesn't take a lot of money to make a massive difference to the lives of these people. Here are just a few examples of how far your money goes:

  • $90 buys three sets of school uniforms for each child and includes Sports, Winter, and Summer uniforms plus shoes and socks
  • $7 pays for a child's school fees for a month (each child attends eight subjects including English)
  • $5 buys books, pens, and other stationary for one month
  • $230 pays for one month's rent of the three storey house in which the children and carers reside
  • $40 buys a month's supply of rice

So get along to the Central on Wednesday night, have a great time with your fellow brainiacs, and make a difference to those who need it most.

Doors open at 6.30 with $10 entry per person. Teams of up to nine are invited to enter.
