Inspiring Australia Day
Thursday 30 May 2013
Locals inspiring locals
Outside of Port Douglas, Far North Queensland is famous for its two world heritage listed sites, the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.
But ask a local about town pride, and the names of home-grown heroes are likely answers.
Tonight’s inaugural Inspiring Australia Day event aims to recognise these heroes, with local personalities set to rouse the crowd at Central Hotel’s Garden Bar.
Billed as “inspirational locals inspiring locals,” the Port event is one of many in regional and metro Australia.
World champion triathlete Nick Carling (right), competing in Cairns Airport Adventure Festival events including this Sunday’s Coral Coast Triathlon, is a featured speaker for tonight’s Port event.
He'll be joined by local radio personality & musician Kim Hurley, President of Port Douglas Crocs Andy Smith, outrigger canoe world champion Fay Lilley, and businessman and mother Kylie Sampson.
Event organiser, Fitness Paradise Gym’s Teri Wilson, said all funds raised or donated will benefit local legend Coral Deen, and her battle with cancer.
Inspiring Australia Day celebrations kick off at 7pm.
