Free garden mulch giveaway
Garden mulch will be made available to residents free of charge from Cairns Regional Council’s waste transfer stations THIS weekend.
The annual mulch giveaway follows the recent free green waste disposal period, provided to help residents clean up their yards after the wet season.
Mayor Bob Manning said the free disposal period was well-utilised.
“The waste transfer stations received 1430 tonnes of green waste during that time,” Cr Manning said. “From that green waste, 7000 cubic metres of garden mulch has been created to be returned to the community free of charge.
“A mulched garden is more resilient over the dry season and requires less watering. It’s also more resistant to weed growth.”
Mulch will be available to collect on Friday, May 24, to Monday, May 27 from the following locations:
• Portsmith Transfer Station (Open 7 days 8.30 am - 5.15pm)
• Smithfield Transfer Station (Mon to Sat 7am - 5.15pm, Sun 9am - 5.15pm)
• Gordonvale Transfer Station (7 days 8.30 am - 5:15pm)
• Killaloe Transfer Station (Mon - Sat 8am - 5.15 pm, Sun 9am - 5.15pm)

• Babinda Transfer Station (7 days 8.30am - 4.45pm)
Mulch is for domestic use only and can be collected via car, utility, trailer or light truck up to 4 tonnes
maximum GVM.
