What's in a name?

Not even a week has passed since the decision to break away from Cairns Regional Council was made, and already talk of new name for our region has begun.

The push for de-amalgamation was about "getting our Shire back." The Douglas Shire, and the Douglas Shire Council in particular, means different things to different people.

For some it represented everything that is special about where we live. For others it conjures memories less than positive.

Daintree Regional Council, Daintree Council, Port Douglas Mossman Daintree Shire Council, and Port Douglas Daintree Shire Council have been put forward as possibilities by a couple of The Newsport readers, and we'd like to see your suggestions.

Should we return to the Douglas Shire? Should we wipe the slate clean and start again with a new name in a new era? What name best reflects our region?

If you've got a name for our region you'd like to suggest, let us know in the 'Have Your Say' section below.
