Sharks win 1st home game of season

Mossman-Port Douglas celebrated their first win of the Bendigo Bank CDRL A-Grade season with a convincing 52-28 win over winless Atherton Roosters at Mossman Showgrounds on Saturday night.

The hosts ran in 10 tries to five in a dominant display, with Sharks player-coach Bronson Ryan delighted with his side’s display after two defeats in the first two rounds.

“I thought it was a really great effort from the boys,” he said. “The forwards stepped up and took on the Roosters pack, and Daryl’s (Lightning) leadership was outstanding".

“We’re really developing as a team and I was particularly pleased with our discipline. We were a lot more professional than we were in the first two rounds. We’re there to have fun and enjoy our footy, but I also want to see commitment on game day".

“It was great to see everyone enjoying that winning feeling in the sheds afterwards, and we really did work as a team to get the result.”

Reigning premiers Brothers also secured their first win of the year when they edged previously unbeaten Southern Suburbs 18-16 in a thrilling clash at Alley Park on Sunday.

Centre James Doolah crossed for the winning try with just three minutes on the clock to break the hearts of Suburbs, who had fought back from 14-0 down in the second half.

Ivanhoes coach Alan Benn said his side still had plenty of room for improvement following their second straight win, this time over a winless Edmonton Storm 16-12 at Smithfield.

“It was a grinding win but we’re still making too many mistakes with ball in hand,” Benn said. “We’re dropping the ball too much, and our completion rate is suffering, so I’ll be looking for the boys to fix that up over the coming weeks".
