Search for Carnivale songbird

The search for the song that embodies the spirit of Port Douglas is on again ahead of this year’s Port Douglas Carnivale.

And tickets have also gone on sale for an Australian rock legend who will perform at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas during Carnivale.

The annual Song of Carnivale competition searches for songwriters and performers who produce the song which embodies the spirit of Port Douglas and its annual celebration of life in the tropics.

This year, Radio Port Douglas will once again take on a leading role organising the event, with the winner to be announced at the official launch of Carnivale on Friday, April 19 along with the winner of Miss Carnivale and Miss Charity.

Radio Port Douglas spokesperson Kim Hurley, herself a songwriter, said the competition this year was not only open to singers and songwriters, but also producers who wrote electronic music from scratch.

“The song will capture the happy, upbeat, local vibe of our community festival,” said Ms Hurley.

“It should be around three minutes in length and contain a bridge/chorus/hook which can be easily lifted to create 30 and/or 15 sec jingles for Carnivale’s radio and TV commercials.”

Entrants must register online at www.carnivale.com.au by 5pm, Friday, April 5.
The heats will be held at the Central Hotel Port Douglas on Tuesday, April 9, between 5pm and 7.30pm, with finalists announced at 8pm.

The finalists’ recordings will then be posted on both Radio Port Douglas and Carnivale facebook sites inviting votes for their readers’ favourite songs. Votes are to be registered at www.facebook.com/radioportdouglas  to determine ‘people’s choice’.

The finalists will then perform at the Miss Carnivale Launch at the Port Douglas Combined Clubs on Friday, April 19 with the winner given recognition throughout Carnivale media platforms as well as a professional recording of the song.

Meanwhile, tickets have now gone on sale for the Daryl Braithwaite outdoor concert at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas on Saturday, May 25.

The former lead man of iconic Australian rock band, Sherbet, Braithwaite’s highly-acclaimed solo careers has produced hits such as Horses and You’re My World. Braithwaite was also crowned Australia's King of Pop by TV Week over three consecutive years from 1975 to 1977.
