Poseidon Sailaway Summer Series Race 7 & 8
With a 7 to 10 knot NW breeze the six yachts contesting the final days racing in the Poseidon Sailaway Summer Series faced a downwind start for the first time in many years.
As the fleet crossed the line for the 10am start of Race 7 spinnakers were hoisted and the race was underway with Shazam and Ann Sea leading the way closely followed by Ice, Casuarina, Ruff Red and Port FM Mais Oui. Ruff Red coming into the race with a 3 point Series lead had their sights set firmly on the Series win with the calm seas again favouring the smaller and lighter boats.
Shazam completed the course in 11:30:30 to take line honours and after corrected time (01:24:59) retained the lead holding out Ruff Red (01:27:52) in second followed by Ann Sea (01:29:05), Casuarina (01:30:01), Ice (01:30:37) and Port FM Mais Oui (01:51:46).
The second place giving Ruff Red an unassailable series lead heading into the final race.
With the course marker and the start line adjusted to accommodate the NE breeze the six yachts came to the 2:00pm start for race 8 with the anemometers reading little above zero.
The water had barely a ripple and the heat was stifling but this did not deter the resolve of the PDYC yachties determined to steer their yachts around the course.
With Shazam leading the way and taking a full hour to complete the first lap of the course already reduced to 0.8 nautical miles it looked certain that the race would be shortened further to two laps.
However, the breeze lifted and by 3:30pm the fleet was enjoying a 10 to 12 knot breeze that was perfect for the calm sea state. Shazam went on to complete the course in 01:40:48 again taking line honours but falling short of a podium place on corrected time (01:35:46).
The win went to Ice (01:30:31) with arch rival Casuarina (01:31:48) second and Ann Sea (01:33:54) third.
After the race Ruff Red faced a protest hearing from the Race Committee for failing to cross the start line and received a 7 point penalty. However, with two discarded scores from the 8 race series coming into effect on the last day was able to discard this and went on to claim the Series with an impressive 11 points ahead of Ann Sea (14) in secondand Shazam (16) third.
