Kangaroos down Knights in CDRL

Kangaroos continued their fine start to the CDRL Bendigo Bank A Grade season with a 38-14 win over Ivanhoes in searingly hot conditions at Vico Oval on Sunday.

Roos coach Michael White was thrilled with his side’s second straight win to start the season, in comparison to 2012 when the Mooroobool club won just two of their opening eight rounds.

“It’s been a great start to the season and something we worked really hard on in pre-season,” said former Northern Pride Academy Under 18s coach White.

“All the boys talked about being in the top half in the early part of the season, and I couldn’t be happier at this stage.

“It’s also been a blessing to not have my Pride commitments this season.

“I’ve been able to dedicate more commitment and thought to the squad, and pre-season was terrific – one of the best we’ve ever had.”

White said his side still had room for improvement against the Knights, who had also won their opening game of the season.

“Like most games, we did have a few bad patches, particularly with a lot of turnover in the second half, but overall I’m really happy in what were difficult conditions,” he said.

“I think Ivanhoes are very similar to us – new recruits, new faces, and a club on the rise – so, it was a good test for us to get through.”

Roos winger Kareem Tabuai and five-eighth Harry Ambrym crossed twice for the hosts.

Mareeba coach Rod Jensen celebrated his first win in charge of a CDRL club as the Gladiators secured an impressive 32-12 win over a disappointing Edmonton Storm.

Gladiators star Shana Aue had a day to remember, scoring three tries and converting four of Mareeba’s six tries.

Storm coach Brian Paul will be disappointed with his side’s second straight defeat, consolation tries from Brian Murgha and Justin Torney their only highlight.

Tully continued their impressive form, making it two wins out of two in a 26-8 home win over Atherton Roosters.

Greg Miglio, John Lavell, Mick Costa, Mua Sala and Tonu Talanoa crossed for the Tigers, the latter unfortunately suffering a broken ankle which puts his season in doubt.

Southern Suburbs kept up their 100 per cent record as the flexed their muscles in a thumping 70-20 win over Yarrabah at Jilara Oval.

Meanwhile, Innisfail bounced back from their opening round defeat against Tully with a resounding 54-6 thrashing of Mossman-Port Douglas.

Leprechauns centre Nick Accatino crossed for three tries, while Andre Rore added a brace as the hosts piled on 10 tries to one.
