Junior Marlin squad selected
Douglas Netball held trials last Friday for Junior Marlin selection at the Mossman Indoor Sports Complex. Heather McLaren, president from the Marlin Coast Netball Association and Junior Marlins Co-ordinator, came up for the selection with 18 players trialling.
DNA had a record 12 players chosen to attend the Junior Marlin camps. The players displayed excellent skills and attitude which is testament to all the training they have put in.
DNA president and current Marlin Coast Academy Coach, Sharon Beechey, has brought important skills back to DNA and imparted her knowledge to the girls.
The DNA has come from relatively few players recognised in the Cairns and regional athlete squads, to now being strong contenders and it's great to see all the hard work has paid off.
The Junior Marlin program is in its third year and is a lead up to the Academy program. The players chosen need to show a positive and professional attitude, and an ongoing ability and athleticism by maintaining a home-based program.
They attend four training camps over the year to display to the satellite coaches their improvement. The first camp was last Sunday at the Smithfield YMCA where they were trained and coached by former Australian Netball Captain, Vicki Wilson, along with satellite coaches and umpires from Cairns and around the region.
This camp was the culmination of a two-day sports forum where the Academy players (14-17 years) were chosen for this year. Natalie Littler from Douglas trialled for the Academy but was unsuccessful. Natalie has fantastic attitude and ability we hope to see her trial again next year.
