And the survey says...

The tourism industry will be better off under a de-amalgamated Douglas Shire Council, according to a survey undertaken by local tourism body Tourism Port Douglas Daintree.

Following on from a survey of Cairns Regional Council and Friends of Douglas Shire by Douglas Chamber of Commerce, TPDD "summarised the tourism related replies" received by the Chamber and posed the following question to its members:

Based on the information provided which of the following options (amalgamation with CRC or a re-formed Douglas Shire Council) do you believe will provide the greatest benefit for the future of tourism in the Douglas region?

"On direction from the Board of TPDD we have done a survey of our members following the feedback on the questions the Chamber sent to the groups involved in the de-amalgamation debate," executive officer of TPDD, Doug Ryan, said.

"The object is to help us to advise our tourism partners, TEQ (Tourism and Events Queensland), TTNQ (Tourism Tropical North Queensland), QTIC (Queensland Tourism Industry Council) and industry on the direction and feelings of the tourism industry in the Douglas region."

Of the 33 respondents, nearly 82 per cent believed tourism in the region would be better served under a Douglas Shire Council, while just 18 per cent said the amalgamation with CRC remains a better option.
