Action stations for Korean delegates

Ten Korean travel company delegates have converged on the region as part of a Tourism Queensland initiative to boost visitor numbers to Tropical North Queensland.

TQ's Paul Buggy will accompany the group.

"They're here for a familiarisation of Port Douglas and the Cairns region. About a third of the group have been here before, but predominantly, for the rest of them this is their first visit," Mr Buggy said.

"It's a good opportunity for us to showcase the region to senior product managers of major travel companies in Korea so they know first-hand what the destination has to offer, and start to put the destination in their travel programs for sale to their customers for their summer period which will be coming up shortly."

According to Mr Buggy, the Korean market is significant, featuring in the top six nationalities who visit Queensland.

"There has been a bit of shuffling in the top six with China coming on strong, but Korea has always been a very good market for this region, particularly for honeymooners, and also young Koreans who come in on a working holiday visa and spend a bit of time and money in the region.

"From a yield point of view the Korean market is good, and we're hoping to increase that."

The delegation arrived at the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas early yesterday morning, and spent some free time exploring the town while others headed to a local golf course for a round. Grub's Personalised Trike Tours were also enlisted to give the delegates a different perspective of the region.

After spending last night at QT Resort Port Douglas, they will today have Breakfast with the Birds at Wildlife Habitat, before heading to Kuranda and Cairns this afternoon. They'll explore the Reef on Saturday, experience hot air ballooning and white water rafting on Sunday, before heading back to Korea on Monday.
