Changed traffic conditions in Port Douglas

A number of changed traffic conditions will be in place this Sunday, June 9, for the Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns event.

When planning your travel arrangements please ensure you leave plenty of time and expect delays.

Access within Port Douglas will be open at all stages of the day.

  • Captain Cook Highway will be closed between Old Port Road and Palm Cove Boulevard, Palm Cove between 6am and 6:30pm.
  • Port Douglas will operate under normal road conditions until 7am.
  • Macrossan St will be closed from 7am to 5pm, with access via a diversion route - Port Douglas Road will be down to one lane, and Davidson Street traffic will be diverted down Port Street onto Wharf Street.
  • From 6am to 6:30pm, access to Cairns from Port Douglas will be via Mulligan Highway, Mt Molloy, Mareeba and Kuranda.

USM Events estimates travel time between Cairns and Port Douglas to be about 2 to 2 ½ hours.

There are also boat transfers between Port Douglas and Cairns operating on the day, the first leaves Port Douglas at 6:30am.

If you're keen to check out some of the bike action, great vantage points will be anywhere on Old Port Road and near the Port Gardens roundabout, on Port Douglas Road, Davidson Street and Macrossan Street.

Riders will turn right onto Old Port Road off the Captain Cook Highway, continue down Port Douglas Road and Davidson Street before turning left on Macrossan Street and turning around outside the Central Hotel at 9 Macrossan St.

The Central Hotel will feature as a live site, with big screen, a sports commentator and music. Join the crowds to cheer on over 1500 cyclists as they do two laps into Port
Douglas.

All businesses and restaurants will be open as usual.

Buses will still run on Sunday 9th June via the Mulligan Hwy and Kennedy Hwy, and event organisers will assist where possible to ensure they move through Port Douglas as quickly as possible. Patrons are asked to allow 5 to 5 ½ hours to get to Cairns on this day if travelling the alternate route.
