For Sale: Mossman SHS land

A section of Mossman State High School land will go under the hammer, as part of the Government’s decision to sell 105 school assets, including ovals, land reserved for state schools, and former teacher accommodation.

The Government assets, described by Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek as surplus and unused, have already been sold, are being sold, or considered for sale, as The Courier-Mail reported yesterday.

“The LNP government and the Education Minister do not care about providing a quality state school education for Queensland kids – they are more interested in quality real estate,” State Opposition leader Annastacia Palaszczuk told The Newsport.

“That’s why they are staging a wholesale sell off of state schools and state school assets throughout the state.”

As well as the partial Mossman SHS land, Haren Street in Mareeba was surplus vacant land for sale, one of at least nine properties marked as ‘land reserved for state schools’.

In a statement earlier this week, Mr Langbroek said the Newman Government is “delivering on its commitment to the education, training and employment of Queenslanders by increasing spending by 6.5 per cent this financial year.”

As part of this “commitment to education”, Mr Langbroek said the land sales were being used to address a $300 million maintenance backlog.

"There are 1240 schools in this state that have had maintenance issues fixed thanks to this decision to sell unused, surplus properties,” he said.

Mr Langbroek said the sales were mentioned in last year’s State Budget. He has come under fire for providing a list of lot numbers instead of school names and addreses, when the sales were questioned in State Parliament.

“Not only is that extremely arrogant, it insults parents and children everywhere who are genuinely concerned about the future of their schools," Ms Palaszczuk said.
