Chamber Minutes May 30

Monday 27 May 2013

The Douglas Chamber congratulates The Newsport Daily for getting a dedicated Business Page for our region!

We will be actively supporting this initiative by contributing weekly articles. This will include Chamber news, business information and putting forward our view point on regional issues.

In addition we will be profiling different chamber members each week and encouraging members to put forward articles in their area of expertise. If you have an interesting business story and would like it published on this page and you are a member of the Douglas Chamber then forward it to president@portdouglaschamber.com.au.

Jeff Tate
I am pleased to advise that  our committee member Kym Rowley will be on Jeff's Tate's de amalgamation advisory committee. Kym has a wealth of business experience and as the Manager of the Tin Shed has a good understanding of local issues. Kym's role on the advisory committee will be to offer his opinion and advise as well as directing Jeff to other members of the community who have broader knowledge in different areas. The community has made the decision to de amalgamate. The Chamber will be doing whatever it can to ensure that the transition process is a smooth and equitable one, and that the new council is set up with a structure that will be successful and resilient.  Kym will be making regular contributions on the Newsport Business page to keep you up to date on the process.

Red Tape Reductions
This week I will be attending The Red Tape Round Table Meeting to meet with the Assistant Minister for Finance, Administration and Regulatory Reform (reporting directly to the Treasurer), Deb Frecklington. This  will be an opportunity to  discuss everyday red tape challenges businesses are facing, and importantly, areas of opportunity that can be addressed. The Douglas Chamber have tabled restricted trading on Good Friday and the high cost of penalty rates to be discussion points. I will report back on what is discussed.

Carnivale
Finally it is the count down to Carnival Taste, Watch, Dance Play.

2013 Carnivale is a unique opportunity for the people of Douglas to celebrate our identity.  Carnivale is a region wide event, not Port centric.  As the major event in the region, we encourage all Shire businesses and families to attend enjoy this years festivities.

There is a fantastic line up of events planned this year. Well done to all the Carnivale Team! A lot of work goes into the planning and logistics of Carnivale, so please support it by your participation. If you have not done so already check out the website www.carnivale.com.au. I look forward to seeing you all at the street parade!
