Pets caught in boat fire

On Monday around midday a fire, apparently caused by the air conditioning unit on board the catamaran Silver Lining II, moored at the Port Douglas Meridien Marina, ended in tragedy for the boat's owners.

Both their pet dog and pet cat were on board when the fire struck.  Neighbouring boat owners at the Marina saw the blaze and managed to hose down the fire sufficiently to save the dog but unfortunately the cat could not be reached.

Fire crews, ambulance and police arrived and moved the boat to the other side of the Marina  for safety and finally extinguished the fire.

The Fire Chief could not confirm what had caused the fire but was investigating with the owners to prepare a report for insurers.

As soon as full details are released, The Newsport will bring readers up to date.
