Passengers who step into the world's fastest lift in Taiwan's tallest building, Taipei 101, are catapulted at a speed of 1,010 metres per minute, or 60 km/h.

The ride in this Ferrari among lifts between the fifth and 89th floors lasts a mere 37 seconds, at the end of which passengers step out at 382 metres above the ground at the observation floor.

The world's second-fastest, located in the Yokohama Landmark Tower in Japan, 'only' manages a speed of 750 meters per minute.

The world's tallest building, the 830 metre Burj Khalifa in Dubai, occupies third place in the list, with a maximum elevator speed of a mere 36km/h.

This building also offers travellers the longest distance ride currently possible in a lift, exiting after 504 metres at the world's highest stop, 638 metres.

The research did not reveal the fastest lift in Port Douglas, however it is believed to be located in a home on Flagstaff Hill where passengers can undertake an impressive journey from the first to the second floor in just 1.8 seconds.

2014 will see the Shanghai Tower take over as having the world's fastest lifts, clocking speeds of 64.8 km/h. The tower itself will become the world's second-tallest building on completion.
