Two suspected irukandji stings were reported off Four Mile Beach on the weekend with a seven year-old boy and 33 year-old woman treated at Mossman Hospital.

Col Sparkes from Surf Life Saving North Queensland said conditions are perfect for irukandji with calm seas and northerly and nor-westerly winds prevailing.

Mr Sparkes could not confirm whether the stings had occurred inside or outside of the stinger nets.

Four Mile Beach is one of eight patrolled local beaches closed for swimming at present. Mr Sparkes said the life savers err on the side of caution with beaches expected to remain closed until weather conditions change.

He also warned of the danger of the larger Box Jellyfish in coastal waters saying "You're taking your life in your hands" if you choose to swim, or even paddle in unprotected areas with stings possible in shallow, ankle deep water.
