Sustainability group backs split
The Douglas Shire Sustainability Group has thrown its support to the de-amalgamation of the former Douglas Shire from Cairns Regional Council after consulting its members.
The DSSG has reviewed the financial model put forward by Friends of Douglas Shire and believes the economic considerations have been "more than adequately dealt with."
Current president of the DSSG, Kevin Eldridge, said their decision was based on the triple bottom line prospects for the region.
“The economic, social and environmental sustainability of this area would be better served with a return to a Douglas Shire Council,” he said.
“This vote is essentially about returning the decision making to the people who live and work locally, to people who have invested in the community financially and socially.”
Other factors in the decision were listed as the potential loss of representation should CRC move to non-divisional elections in 2016, the greater possibility of a return to chlorine free water under a Douglas Shire Council, and the future security of the Douglas planning scheme.
